Die 22-jährige Luxemburgerin Jana Bahrich, alias Francis of Delirium, ist die wohl lautetste Stimme eines ansonsten eher ruhigen Landes. Nachdem sie ihre ersten drei EPs, die vor Alt-Rock-Angst und Lockdown-Nihilismus nur so strotzten, noch – wie sie sagt – in „a basement next to the washing machine” selbst aufnahm und produzierte, veröffentlicht Francis of Delirium am 22.03.2024 ihr mit Spannung erwartetes Debütalbum Lighthouse via Dalliance Recordings. Im Zuge ihres Albumreleases kommt die junge Künstlerin im April dieses Jahres für vier Konzerte nach Deutschland, Österreich und in die Schweiz.
Nach einem ereignisreichen Jahr, in dem sie mit Künstler:innen wie Soccer Mommy, Briston Maroney, Horsegirl und The Districts auf Tour war und bei Festivals wie dem Treefort Fest, Shaky Knees, Eurosonic und Iceland Airwaves auftrat, sowie als Support für The 1975 und Wolf Alice spielte, liefert Francis of Delirium mit ihrem neuen Album nun auch einen neuen Sound. Mit den bereits veröffentlichten Vorabauskopplungen „Real Love„, „First Touch„, produziert von Catherine Marks (Boygenius, The Killers, Wolf Alice), sowie „Blue Tuesday“ und „Give It Back to Me“ wendete sich Bahrich von der düsteren Lyrik der grunge-inspirierten Songs ihrer ersten EPs ab und etabliert sich als Hymnen-Schreiberin, die in ihren Songs die Ängste und Verzweiflung der Gen-Z angesichts einer unsicheren Zukunft in persönlichen Texten und eingängigen Coming of Age-Fragmenten verpackt.
Der Titel ihres neuen Albums Lighthouse steht metaphorisch für ihre Musik, die sich schon immer an der Grenze zwischen Licht und Dunkelheit bewegt hat, sowohl musikalisch als auch textlich. Durch die Einbindung von Piano-Elementen und Akustikgitarren erweitert sich die Instrumentierung der Sängerin, und lässt die Songs des Albums intim und entwaffnend wirken. Für die Aufnahmen ihres Debütalbums arbeitete Francis of Delirium erneut mit Chris Hewett, die andere Hälfte hinter dem Projekt, zusammen.
Über die Inspirationsquellen ihres neuen Albums erzählt Bahrich:
„For this album, hope is the prevailing feeling I’m left with after making it and listening to it. The idea is that there is this light guiding you out into a space where you can be more open and accepting of love and joy. Even as you gain or lose love, it never really goes away; it just transforms itself, moving into other relationships with you.“
Zur ersten Singleauskopplung „Real Love„, die sich mit Themen wie Angst und Verzweiflung beschäftigt, sagt die junge Musikerin:
„‘Real Love’ at its heart is a simple song about being in love with your best friend. For years, timing got in the way. I got in my own way, and then finally, it worked out. Coming out of a two-month-long tour in the US and heading into summer back at home, it felt like my world was opening up. I wanted to write a song that reflected the feeling of leaning into vulnerability, a song that embraces telling the people you love what they mean to you and truly meaning it. Spending every night watching The Districts on tour really impacted me. There was this hopefulness I heard in their music that I really connected to. After writing our last EP The Funhouse which was all about darkness and the feeling of being engulfed by the chaos of the world, I just couldn’t write anything super dark and heavy at the time, it just wouldn’t come out. My body and brain were just guiding me to writing lighter, more open music”.
Die darauffolgende Single „First Touch“ behandelt hingegen Sujets wie Hoffnung und Liebe.
Über „First Touch“ erzählt Bahrich:
‘First Touch’ was a bit of a departure from our usual approach of writing with heavy electric guitar and drums. Instead, Chris and I decided to start experimenting with acoustic guitar and drums. During that time, I started listening to a lot of Sheryl Crow’s music, particularly her song ‚Soak Up the Sun,‘ which became a source of inspiration for the song. I wanted ‚First Touch‚ to have a kind of ’sun-rock‘ vibe. The core of ‚First Touch‚ is about looking back at love with a sense of nostalgia and idealism. I wanted to capture the youthful feeling of being completely consumed by someone and believing everything would work out, even if that is naive. But I also wanted to emphasize the beauty of that sentiment, the hope and trust that come with really believing in the authenticity of love.“
Die Musik der in Luxemburg lebenden Künstlerin findet auch über die Grenzen des kleinen Landes hinaus großen Anklang und wurde bereits von Stereogum, The FADER, Paste, Pitchfork, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, KEXP und NPR hochgelobt, um nur einige zu nennen. Mit dieser Entwicklung gibt Bahrich dem Sound der Gen-Z Luxemburgs endlich ein Gesicht, katapultiert das kleine Land wieder auf die musikalische Weltbühne und gibt einer Szene Aufwind, die sogar noch jünger ist als sie selbst.
„20 years ago there were almost no venues in the country at all. The music scene here is very young. There aren’t really any labels, managers or booking agents based here. Growing up there was no youth culture in Luxembourg, it’s a place where young people leave once they’re able. Any bands that did come out of Luxembourg would have to go and gig in Belgium and France, but now it feels like something is starting to change and a real music scene is starting to take shape.“, erzählt Francis of Delirium.
Als Tochter eines international tätigen kanadischen Lehrerpaares verbrachte Bahrich einen Großteil ihrer Jugend in ständiger Bewegung. Geboren in Antwerpen, zog sie dann in die Schweiz, verbrachte ihre Teenagerjahre in der pulsierenden Künstlerszene Vancouvers, bevor sie schließlich in Luxemburg landete. Zunächst niedergeschlagen angesichts der Aussicht auf Veränderung, entwickelte sich Bahrich zu einer entschlossenen Verfechterin dieses kleinen Landes, in dem sie Beziehungen knüpfte, die ihren einzigartigen Sound maßgebend prägten. Luxemburg mag vielleicht nicht den Ruf als kreatives Epizentrum haben, aber mit Künstler:innen wie Francis of Delirium scheint es bereit zu sein, wieder etwas mehr im Rampenlicht zu stehen.
Das Debütalbum Lighthouse erscheint am 22.03.2024 via Dalliance Recordings. Vom 19. bis 24. April 2024 kommt Francis of Delirium schließlich für vier Konzerte nach Bern, Wien, Berlin und Hamburg.
